This presentation is based on the themes of International Midwives Day and Nurse’s Week Programs sponsored by Nursing With A Difference and held in the Pukekohe Town Hall, New Zealand from 9.30am to 6.30pm on 3 and 10 May 2008.
A critical review of some issues that influence staffing patterns, quality care and leadership in Nursing preceded a brief time to prayerfully seek the wisdom and intervening power of God for each issue.
Keynote speakers included Mr. Geoff Annals CEO of Nurses Organisation of New Zealand, Mrs. Vai Nasari from the Samoan Nurses Association and Pacifica, and Ms. Paulette Taylor and Brenda Close of Te Runanga e Aotearoa, thus adding reality to the regional, national and international perspective.
It is anticipated that Nurses going through these Power Point presentations will be encouraged to:
1. Challenge our approach and to offer constructive suggestions
2. Recognize the need for all Nurses to join, irrespective of religious conviction, in prayer to the Almighty God of creation for wisdom and clear direction in addressing the issues surrounding the world-wide critical shortage of Nurses that is jeopardizing our profession and threatening our competence as Nurses.
On introducing Geoff Annals to the small number of Nurses present, his comment to the effect that ‘it is not numbers but what we are doing of real value that counts towards the quality and effective resolution of our dilemmas at local, national and international levels’ is worth noting.
